Brittany Lozinak Professor Bentley English 1101 14 Nov. 2014 Wal-Mart: Saving Grace or Destruction? Introduction Wal-Mart is probably today’s most popular chain store in America and around the world. They have products ranging from food to furniture and a pharmacy, so everything a person needs is in one place. It is great, right? WRONG! Wal-Mart has a side of them they do not want anyone to see. People only see the retail environment and associates they do not see the actual people running the show. Wal-Mart hides information from the public such as: they destroy jobs, they are sexist when it comes to women and they are bad for the economy in general. Yes, they hire almost anyone as long as the person has open availability and would be there at their convenience. The workers that Wal-Mart have been discriminating against are our female family members. Wal-Mart has been facing several lawsuits about discriminating against women. In 2001, data showed 65% of its workers are female and only 33% of those women were managers (Zellner 2). A woman in any position of the company made five to 15% less than the male workers (Migdal 1). According to Lawyer Migdal, “managers feel free to make statements like women will ‘never make as much money as men,’ or that women could be paid less because they were ‘working for the sake of working…”’ (Migdal 1). Back in the 60s, women worked just to work but, now, both parents need to work to provide for the modern family. It also takes longer for Women to move up on the career ladder, reports Zellner (Zellner 3). Obviously, Wal-Mart has favoritism and it is not for our fellow sisters. Wally World
