Supernatural things in stories are dramatized, while the nature and more day-to-day ordinary things are downplayed in stories. I mean, think about it, shouldn’t it be the opposite to scare the reader when thinking about the world around them? My name is Diego Xavier Moreno, and my speech is about nature and the supernatural. The supernatural elements of stories are scary or worrisome. Even so, the more natural things in life are scarier than anything that is supernatural. Exploring Rumsfeld’s logic in literature, people use it to explain characters’ fears. As it goes, if someone knows, or understands something then there’s nothing to fear, but if they don’t know something, or they’re aware there’s more they don’t understand, it’s easier to be afraid of the unknown. In Young Goodman Brown, the protagonist knew the man he met in the woods wasn’t normal, but he wasn’t afraid. He knew the woods were considered bad or taboo by his religion, but because of his faith, he wasn’t scared. However, he awoke after the strange ceremony, scared and paranoid, unsure if the things he experienced were real. From then on, he didn’t trust anyone ever again until he died. In the strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Mr. Utterson and others were scared because of the ongoing murders, though their fear subsided after learning that Dr. Lanyon took his own life when he discovered Dr. Jekyll was Mr. Hyde.
