Frankenstein Essay Response In Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein, the creature serves as a model for society’s alienation of people. Once Victor succeeds he realizes he disrupted nature and he disowns his creation out of disgust. Now the creature has no one to love and nurture him. Shelley’s use of the creature’s abandonment resembles the judgement society subjected orphans to. Shelley highlights the faults in society by using the creature as a paradigm for the innocence the orphans possess as children and the consequences that occur from their mistreatment. Abandonment begins the alienation process of the creature and orphans from society. For most of history those who were endowed with a low social status were forced to endure the censure of society for their entire life, even if a few managed to obtain a higher status, they were still scrutinized. The creature believes the cottagers to be the epitome of mankind because of their amity and happiness, but he learns that only property and riches matter in society. Shelley’s development of the cottagers and creature allow the audience to create emotional ties to the characters, but the creature’s discovery of the truth forces the audience to re-evaluate the rules of the community.
