I am writing to convince you that Mahtab Ahmady is the ideal candidate for UNESCO’s World Citizenship Award She endures great hardship constantly throughout a period of her life, Mahtab’s response to the persistent hardship she endured whilst living under Taliban rule in her homeland, Afghanistan. During the decision and journey of leaving Afghanistan to make the journey for a safer life in Australia, and the continuum of difficulties Mahtab faces once she arrives in Australia, as a refugee seeking asylum. . It is Mahtab’s display of optimism and her indomitable spirit when faced tremendous adversity that makes her a worthy representative of this prestigious award.

No burqas, no veils, not even a scarf” Upon arrival of Mahtab and her family, they are then put into a detention centre to face a long and agonising wait for freedom and news of their father. This story certainly provides us a fresh view of life as a refugee, especially while living in detention. We are giving an insight into the boredom, the difficult conditions, the segregation, the intense fear, isolation and despair experienced by a family living in no man’s land, where their lives are determined by things outside their control. “’This is a prison’… ‘They said this was a free country.’ ‘Why do you do this to us?’” Even though they faced uncertainty about their belonging to this new environment “Stranger in a strange land. This is not my place. These are not my people.” Settling into their new found home proved to be a difficult challenge as they arrived without preparation “they will ask about us about why we came here to Australia and why we have no papers.” This proves to stall their progression to officially live in Australia. The language barrier between Mahtab and the locals is an obstacle in need of over-coming for Mahtab in order for her to settle into society “Gradually the writing book began to make sense.” Mahtab’s determination and resilience allows her to overcome the obstacles set as a refugee seeking asylum in
