Sir, In light of Ms Nellie Bly’s recent article in New York World, I write to protest about the terrible way our city treats those incarcerated in our mental hospitals. Every aspect of the environment we provide is intimidating. Ms Bly’s account described the iron barred windows and agonising screams that were dismissed as mere noise. This presents the facility as a prison instead of a hospital. Not to add the uncomfortable attire in cold rooms with hard beds In this environment the treatment of patients is at best rough and at worst sadistic. Bly undergoes a series of questions that supposedly prove her mentality state. However even after those relentless questions have been answered it only seems to worsen her case and prove that she is in fact insane. Also other patients in this article have received the same questions is in fact proven by Ms Bly as sane. These questions should come to a conclusion to determine a person’s mentality instead of force as many people they can into the hospital. To add to all this, patients can be shamelessly exploited. Ms Bly accounts the many patients who have not just been exploited by the staff but have been labelled as insane patients just like herself. Ms Bly assesses their minds with a few quick questions and finds them normal. This case proves the hospital staffs are incapable of diagnosing these men and women from the truly insane. Some patients have rendered the hospital staff as hopeless to change their cases. Not only do they dismiss these patients, they also deceive them.
