My Response Essay For “Of Mice And Men” Two migrant workers, George and Lennie, have been let off a bus, miles away from the California farm where they are due to start work. As one rather unique team, they now want to earn themselves some money in order to fulfill their own little dreams. The story is mostly set at that farm, where they work at, and will go through a lot of life changing stuff. This novella is written by author John Steinbeck. It is rather short and was originally published in 1937. In “Of Mice and Men”, Self-reliance plays a really big part of the story, since George can not fully depend on Lennie although they make a great duo. George knows Lennie for a long time, so out of wisdom of all experiences he made with Lennie, …show more content…
It possibly even helps him to get control over him which further adds to him manipulating Lennie. In this case, the manipulation happens in two steps. In the first step, George instructs Lennie on how to behave in the bosses office ( but you ain’t gonna say a word. You jus’ stand there and don’t say nothing.) and in the second, George makes sure that the manipulation sustains. (“Strong as a bull,” he repeated. George scowled at him) Through Georges wisdom he knew that if he gives Lennie a scowled look, he will know that the thing he is doing is wrong and will stop. (George scowled at him, and Lennie dropped his head in shame at having forgotten.) In conclusion, it looks like George completely dictates Lennie around. But I do not think in this way, George certainly does not take advantage of the situation. But it surely adds to the fact that he is pretty self-reliant. From Georges point of view, it looks like he is a master teaching a stupid student. George always gives advise and checks if Lennie could remember. The setting seems kind of empty to me. There is no particular effect the environment could have made to the scene. Pretty much the same would have happened somewhere
