In Return to the Sender by Julia Alvarez, the main character Mari has to deal with the disappearance and reappearance of her mother. This is similar to what Murray has to say “Every typewritten page, every piece of personal stationery with his left-handed scrawl, managed to fill another gaping hole in my heart with something like love” (Murray). Both Maria and Murray use writing as a coping mechanism because it makes them feel like they're filling a gap in their hearts about their parents. Maria writes to feel closer to her mother and less alone. This helps Maria by giving her hope that one day her mother will get to read all the letters she has written for her. On the other hand, Murray feels like the writing helps her by filling in all the missing holes that her father left her when he was gone in her life. The gap that she had when her dad left hurt her and now she feels like she has a dad figure in her life again. Later in the two stories, they find themselves catching up with a loved one. For Maria, it was a little different because her mom couldn't tell everything she quit since she was still young. But on the other hand, Murray's dad was able to tell her a lot more than Maria's mom. Even though the situation of the two parents was different, the two girls had to catch up because years passed by without the girls talking to their parents. It was a bitter-sweet moment when the girls caught up there parents' expecile for Maria.It was hard for the girls cause for so long they struggled without having the parents and it was just a lot of emotions they both hoped their parents would come back and that hope was to be able to catch up. Maria and Murry both used writing as a coping mechanism and their parents saw them as writers. Maria's mom said “She has promised me that when I am grown-up, she will tell me the whole story. ‘And someday when you are a famous writer, you can put it into a book.’ She smiles at the future she imagines for her daughter who is always writing letters or writing in her diary” (Alvarez 314). Murray's Dad said something very similar to this “‘I consider you a writer,’ his typewritten words on thin vellum paper proclaimed, ‘and any suggestions you might care to share on this or other subjects would be most welcome’”
