Laughing, he sank too deeply into one of the lime plastic Adirondack chairs, some of the suds catching the head of the winged scarab on his favorite tee-shirt. “Shit.” He tried, but couldn’t bring up another of the fake laughs. He was too old for this, being lectured by his little brother for what? Not keeping his room clean enough, coming home too late for dinner again. “What are you doing out here? Figured with the bookstore closed, you’d be in bed,” Jake asked. Mark took another swallow of the cold beer and raised the neck toward the stars. In the warm fall night, he squinted too, tried to imagine a black sky with stars pinned everywhere and streaks of meteors falling like sparklers. But this was the second story apartment over an empty store in the middle of San Francisco. The big city light washed the October sky into a golden glow instead. “Thought the meteor showers were last week. Not going to see anything up there,” Jake said. They’d had this fight before too. Mark and Heather ran the Bird & Beckett Book Store next door, selling books and records, both going out of style faster than the old jazz and swing musicians who performed here every Friday. Jake had argued that now Dad was dead, they could go back home to the ranch, leave this all behind. Lord knew after four years, he was never going to escape the mailroom at Summit Financial Investments. Had he ever believed he had enough looks and charm to conquer the
