Of the many characters in The Crucible, Reverend Hale is one of the few that had an influential role in the plot. First introduced in act one, Reverend Hale is called to Salem to diagnose witchcraft. He is continually present from this point forward and his beliefs and actions change considerably as the plot progresses. Throughout the plot of The Crucible, Reverend Hale experiences considerable change, through the beginning, middle and end and can be considered a key dynamic character in the plot. In the beginning of The Crucible, Reverend Hale is first introduced in act one, when Parris sends for him to diagnose any witchcraft that may be occurring in Salem. Prior to his introduction, a brief description is given about Reverend Hale. He is described as an “eager-eyed intellectual” and he considers himself “a young doctor on his first call.” The description also states that “This is a beloved errand for him; on being called here to ascertain witchcraft he felt the pride of the specialist whose unique knowledge has at last been publicly called for.” As he enters the scene, he begins his work looking for signs of witchcraft and starts questioning individuals. He has taken notice of the large amount of witchcraft which that is present from act one and begins taking accusations against others for granted and does not investigate their legitimacy to bring justice. Since Reverend Hale is not looking for evidence when he investigates people, this allows Abigail to manipulate him. She makes it appear that Elizabeth used witchcraft to stab a needle in her stomach, which results in Elizabeth being wrongly accused.
