The risk is that the chance-takers “were pioneers” and gave their lives because of it (3). Being described as a pioneer means that they went through obstacles exploring space, and when they died from continuing the exploration, the giving of their lives was certainly physical. Reagan addresses the children and tells them the future “belongs to the brave” (4). This mention of the future to the children exhibits courage for the crew because Reagan uses the Challenger crew as an example of what the children should become like when saying they should be brave. Based on these observations, the pioneers gained heroism from taking this physical risk. In “A Kenyan Teen’s Discovery: Let There Be Light to Save Lions” by Nina Gregory, a teenage boy puts his life on the line to make a discovery that allows many people to save their livestock. The danger he faced was that he “was walking around with a flashlight,” at night and faced lions (7).
