“We Just Need to Get Along” If you had the chance to change American culture, racial discrimination and indescribable violence, how would you go about doing so? Most are hesitant to answer this question when thinking about our country current standing. Many people would like to believe that they would do it in a peaceful way, but how can you ensure that, when others want their viewpoint heard too? What can you do to make sure what you want is achieved and how can you do it without harming yourself or others? One day in Davis’ ordinary life, a group of Ku Klux Klan members that were his friends, were looking for a bus so they could travel. Many bus companies turned them down because of their Religious views . Davis was not an ordinary black man; he was a black man who wanted positive change in the world. Davis’ Accidental Courtesy started with helping the Klan with transportation. By doing this it allowed for an open mind in both parties. Daryl Davis did not think the KKK was right by any means, but he did respect them and saw them as friends. Even though segregation has been abolished, discrimination is still a major factor in today’s society. In “Between the world and me” Coates feels like he is stuck in a “zombie” body because he can not do anything about the discrimination going on in his life. Coates’ views on life are he’s black and can not speak up about the violence or he will be killed too. Daryl Davis’ views on life is he knows he is black black but he still has a voice so he is going to use it. One of the questions Davis asks is, “how can you hate me if you do not know me?” Everytime Davis asks this question, people reply with a million reasons but not one of them is a good
