In this article titled “Do animals suffer from post-traumatic stress?” written by Sharon Levy, she gives us a new perspective on the effects of traumatic events and explains how different animals can respond and be affected by it. It explores the evidence that hints at animals sharing similar reactions as humans from events caused by stress and fear. Throughout the article, we are given several examples of animals exhibiting similar symptoms of PTSD following traumatic events, especially those rooted in their youth. Behavioral changes in animals can be caused by these mentally distressing events, such as heightened aggression and anxiety. A prime example of this is commonly found in a repeating cycle in the snowshoe hare population. We see the number of hares increase, as well as their predators, then both plummet. Many people may think this is just a normal cycle caused by over indulging predators, but in reality, it may be caused by hares prioritizing hiding rather than taking care of and feeding their young. This response could have resulted from traumatic events, knowing that they may die from being eaten by their predators.
