The book I chose to write about is Go Wild, Eat Fat, Run Free, Be Social, and Follow
Evolution’s Other Rules for Total Health and Well-Being by John L. Tetey, MD, and Richard
Manning. Throughout the paper, I will first explain why I chose this book. I will also discuss topics of interest that made an impact on me. I will list examples of sources that either corroborates the stance of the authors on my topics of interest. Lastly, I will explain how the information I gained through reading this book will affect my personal actions and my professional practice.
The Book: Go Wild
There were two book options to choose from, 10-Minute Mindfulness: 71 Simple Habits for Living in the Present Moment and Go Wild, Eat Fat, Run Free, Be Social, and Follow …show more content…

They stated that they were simply outlining a sustainable way of life, and variety was a key element, nuts, root vegetables, leafy greens, fruits, fish, wild game, clean, and cool water, to name a few (Ratey & Manning, 2014, p95). For me, reading the food section of the book made me think of ways that I can better my diet to avoid digestive problems in the future. I do not eat a lot of junk food, but I know I do not eat as healthy as I could, or should.

One of the statements that stood out to me was when it was mentioned that nurses who work night shifts, are more likely to develop breast cancer and that they also had a 35 percent greater chance of suffering colon cancer (Ratey & Manning, 2014, p149). I am a registered nurse and I recently began working nights. It definitely made me think about what I put my body …show more content…

I will keep in mind that my current schedule is temporary while doing everything I can to make sure I get enough sleep to stay healthy.

Health: Can We Define It? Does It Matter?” focuses on the importance of sleep, and what happens if the body is deprived of it. The article states that sleep health and sleep deficiency emphasize the link to optimal health and well being (Buysse, 2014). A Table within the article also highlights the associated health outcomes that may arise from lack of sleep. These include: metabolic health syndrome, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, depression, and obesity
(Buysse, 2014). The authors in Go Wild also discuss what can go wrong when a person is sleep deprived. “If you don’t get enough sleep, you are going to end up fat, sick and stupid” (Ratey &
Manning, 2014, p127). They went on to explain how lack of sleep can lead to obesity and how sleep deprivation can wreak havoc on the immune system, stating that sleep deprived
