Malcolm X’s essay “Coming to an Awareness of Language” talks about how Malcolm X had developed from a uneducated street hustler to a autodidactic man in prison. Malcolm X was sentenced to Norfolk prison due to his crime. During the years that he stayed in the Norfolk prison, he wrote numerous letters to government, but he never got a reply. Eighth grade was the highest level of education that Malcolm received, so he was so disappointed that he was not able to precisely convey his thoughts in the letters. It is undoubtedly true that reading books broadens your knowledge and increases your vocabulary. Reading provides us with a high level of knowledge on different kinds of topics, including politics, anthropology, and even sociology. And sometimes these knowledge can make a difference in people’s lives. Studying in the United States has been one of my dreams because I am a huge fan of American drama and American culture, I was so eager to come to United States to experience all these things since I was a child. However, I had been asked by myself, how could I go to United States without knowing or being able to speak English. Therefore, I made a determination to learn English and to improve my English skill. I started to read some books in original English version instead of Chinese version. It was certain that I did not know some words, so the best thing I could do was to get a dictionary to study. Meanwhile, I wrote down the words I did not know. The more words I wrote down, the better my English was. It was due to the fact that I kept learning more and more English words. Gradually, I realized an apparent increase in my vocabulary. Because of my effort, I am now studying in the United States to experience and to explore a whole new world.
