The article that I chose to write an article review on is “The Chinese Exclusion Example: Race, Immigration, and American Gatekeeping, 1882-1924” by Erika Lee. In this article, Lee argues that Chinese exclusion introduced a strict ideology of racialized nationalism, where categorizations of race, class, and traditions classified certain groups of people as being undesirable. She then argues that due to the transformation of the United States' identity as a nation of immigration, Chinese exclusion set into motion strong government intervention in immigration that exists to this day. One piece of evidence she uses to support the first part of her argument is a testimony by H. N. Clement, a San Francisco lawyer who testified at the 1876 hearings about Chinese immigration. Lee writes that Clements utilized a combination of themes of racial difference and national sovereignty to articulate his philosophy: “Citing contemporary treatises on international law, Clement argued that the greatest fundamental right of every nation was self-preservation, and the Chinese immigration question was nothing less than a battle for America's survival and future" (Lee, 2002, pp. 3. 4.
