In our society, there are many issues that really affect people negatively. One of those issues is discrimination for things people can not control. For example, some people are discriminated because of their race, their sexual preferences or for having a medical condition. In the book Always Running by Luis J. Rodriguez and the movie Gattaca, both authors/directors include a character that is discriminated or denied certain rights because he does not have the ideal genes or ideal race. Furthermore, in desperation of having what they want, we see how both characters take actions and decisions that they probably would not have took if they were treated equally. In the book Always Running, the author, Luis, is the main character. Luis is Mexican-American. Throughout the book, Luis goes through penury and he is not able to get the education he should be getting because he is Mexican and is therefore considered retarded by his teachers. Luis joined a gang. At first, he joined an innocent club. However, then those innocent clubs started to become “more unpredictable, more encompassing. Something more deadly” (page 43). When he joined the more deadly gangs, he found protection, he felt powerful and he was not discriminate because all members of the gang were also Mexican. In Gattaca, Vincent decided to “borrow an identity”. Because this was the only way in which he could reach his dream, he took the decision although it was an illegal thing to do. The books also relate in this way because the decisions the characters took had both positive and negative effects on them. For Luis, joining a gang gave him power, and protection but also made him a criminal for all the bad things he did. For Vincent, he reached his goal but his innocence in the man being killed was
