In his film, “Do The Right Thing” director Spike Lee incorporates the cultural conflicts and distinctions between different races in a neighborhood. The film focuses on how different characters interact with each other, and the decisions that they have to make, in regards to communicating with each other. Spike Lee manages to dive into the complications of communication between races via a multitude of ways. The film begins with the opening credits showing one of the characters dancing to the song “Fight The Power”. The song and her boxing gloves throughout the credits represent the different cultures “fighting the power” with power symbolizing police brutality and the races who have more control. For example, Radio Raheem is always shown with his huge boom box and loud rap music to characterize black people. At the same time, he does this with Pino & Vito, the italians who worked at the pizzeria wore tank tops and a cross around their neck. Spike Lee does this in order to represent these different racial groups in his film, but most importantly to put out their differences. Scenes like these give background information and more understanding to scenes later on in the movie, like when we saw the white man drive by in his car and the latinos decided to splash him with the fire hydrant. Another moment where the tension between the races could be felt is when the slow music is played when the cops pass by the black guys who are sitting on the sidewalk. The gospel music is used to intensify the scene and the hate they have for each other. Later on in the movie, they have an important scene where they show someone from each race verbally attacking another race to show the conflict and differences that the races have with each other. The camera quickly changes from one race to another, in order to distinguish the different races. Spike Lee does this so it almost feels like the character that is speaking is speaking to the audience
