History of Pittsburgh Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was once also known as the “Steel City”, which is one of the most famous industrial cities in the United States. Over time it developed in the 19th and early 20th centuries and was mainly fueled by the steel industry. At the time, the economy and culture in this region were heavily influenced and dominated by the steel industry which lasted for more than a century!
