We may be used to all the freedoms and opportunities we have in the United States today, but that was not always the case. It wasn’t until 1776 until America had finally earned its independence from the British. With colonist gaining frustration and anger from their treatment from Great Britain, they eventually seeked their own independence to govern themselves. This was exceedingly important because it was the first time in history a group was able to break off the powerful British Empire and showed that they weren’t unstoppable.

No one knows who shot first, but the battle would only last seconds before the colonist would flee towards Concord. After deserting the town, the Americans sprang a trap on the confident British and would make them take heavy losses. The British would lose roughly 300 while the Americans didn’t exceed 100. After the incident, the delegates at another Continental Congress would declare the colonies in a state of defense. The hope for this was to gain a majority of support from the colonist and even other countries. The colonists hoped that claiming the British were the offenders would inspire other countries to join in and take advantage of the pre-occupied country. The delegates would then need to find someone to lead the continental army. It was challenging finding someone who would make everyone delegate happy, with some demands being from the south and being cheap. The believed the root of all the problems was Massachusetts focusing this colony would stop most of the issues. They also planned on taking every city until they captured a capitol, but was proven ineffective since most people were farmers. They would also create a blockade on the coastline, but would be undoubtedly expensive. Not to mention that colonist were already experienced smugglers due to previous taxes.
