Rhetoric Techniques In Wonder, R. J Palacio

In the novel, Wonder, R.J Palacio tells the story of a kid with a craniofacial disorder named August who struggles a lot in school and no one treats him like a normal kid. Palacio uses similes, repetition and rhetorical questions to characterise the dynamic character, Jack Will as good-hearted and caring about Auggie's first year of school. Jack first befriends Auggie because Mr. Tushman tells him to, but after spending some time with Auggie, Jack realises that Auggie is actually a nice kid and is fun to hang out with. In the end, Palacio uses the three macro techniques: tone, mood and characterisation and some micro techniques to convey Jack's perspective of someone who feels empathetic about August and wants to help him.

Jack says, "I felt stupid... I was stupid. I am stupid". When Jack was in science he just got this memory and suddenly understood the reason Auggie was mad at him and ignoring him. He realized how extremely mean he had been when he was talking to Julian. The fact that Jack said he is stupid not once, twice but thrice, shows that he is very sorry for his actions and didn't mean the words he said. The mood Palacio is trying to position us to feel is that we should actually feel sad for Jack who is going through so much and has left behind his popularity to be with Auggie and he didn't mean to do what he did and that he is actually a very kind and caring friend to Auggie. In the end, Palacio uses repetition to make her audience partially lose the hatred/anger they had on Jack for unexpectedly betraying Auggie and prove her message that Jack is actually a good character in the novel.
Palacio uses characterisation to portray Jack as informal and relaxed. She is trying to convey to us that Jack is easy-going, casual and a typical middle school
