I’m fairly confident that I at the very least passed the test with a 3, maybe even a 4. I think that I did as well as I usually do on multiple choice, which hopefully means that I got more than half of them right, but there were more than a few questions that I had trouble with and I ended up not being very confident with my answers for them, however on the whole I think I did alright. For the essays, I spent WAY too much time on the DBQ (I went into the rhetorical analysis time in order to finish it) and I didn’t do a very good time synthesising and using the sources. I’m fairly certain that I answered the prompt thoroughly, but I relied too much on outside information and didn’t use many quotes from the sources. For the rhetorical analysis,
In “The Biggest Loser” (October 23, 2015), Paul Krugman asserts that the Benghazi committee is a witch hunt and that ¨Trey Gowdy and company” are chumps. Mr. Krugman illustrates his displeasure with the committee and the head of it, Trey Gowdy, through belittling diction and Rhetorical question. He uses this choice in diction and rhetorical question in order to deter anyone from taking the accusations of the committee seriously by calling not only the committee “chumps” and but anyone who listens to the committee an ¨ even bigger chump” then the committee is. Krugman appeals to his more liberal audience by talking about the committee, and its tea party support, with a tone of contempt by using insulting diction like “loser” and “chump”.
With all the commercials on TV, one may wonder, “What should I buy to make me smell better?” There is one commercial that seems to reassure the readers of the smart approach to smelling better while pushing them to buy a body wash product they may or may not need. With all the surplus of grooming products out there, is this the one the viewer can trust? The latest “Old Spice” commercial has an original style on advertising its product that most people can’t ignore to watch. The commercial uses just about all of the rhetorical arguments effectively to convince the consumer to buy a product based on perceived need.
The rhetorical analysis uses strategies for readers to point out the author’s main statements or arguments, that are written in their article or book, which can be more helpful for a better understanding. In Goode’s article, “More in College Seek Help For Psychological Problems,” she used a mixture of process analysis, cause and effect, logos, and ethos, which resulted in a outstanding article in the field of mental health. By using these strategies, Goode had accomplished of spreading the awareness of depression, stress, and high levels of anxiety among university students, and stopped the stigma of mental health, which produces a higher rate of graduates. The implication of my analysis was to recognize the message of Goode’s article and observe the use of strategies that were given in the rhetorical analysis. I gained the experience of writing a professional document, since I know the strategies of knowing if an article or text is a reliable source, which can be very useful in my other classes.
In the article “The welcome German open their homes to refugees” by Naina Bajekal, She uses a lot of pathos as well as ethos and logos to convey the struggles of the refugees. Bajekal uses logos by saying, “Germany-Having recorded 200,000 migrant arrival in all of 2014- opened its door to more than 270,000 asylum seekers in september alone” (Bajekal 87). Bajekal used the logos in this quote to show that the Germans were sympathetic to the immigrants and let them into their country. She also uses ethos in order to refute the argument that the response was not welcoming. She said “Conservative parts of the country have been less welcoming, with protest against migrants.
Journal 2: Analyzing Arguments • Analyzing Written Arguments I like how this section starts out defining what Rhetorical Analysis is and gives examples. There are different kind of rhetorical analyses and how each are regarded. I learned that there are “canons of rhetoric” that describe actions of a persuader.
Through Thoreau’s entire essay, “Reading”, revolves around the idea of reading being the way to immortality. He calls for a new society, one that does not focus on the materialistic things in life, but instead on creating an intellectual human culture. Thoreau believes that neither property nor money are true inheritances, but that “books are the treasured wealth of the world and the fit inheritance of generations and nations.” (82). This passage demonstrates Thoreau’s idea of society’s way of aiming too low, instead of striving to read well.
As a reader one has to know what to look for and identify the main idea and understand what the author is trying to argue. Before taking Writing 10 I felt I was a good reader and able to identify the main idea in a prompt, but little did I really know. After going through the research process and trying to identify reliable sources I have essentially cut out the unnecessary information and I go straight to the idea or argument being made by the author. As of before, I would focus on every detail of the writing. Having been assigned readings and having discussions about the readings during class, I soon realized that writing is about an argument being made with supporting evidence.
On a personal level, i think asking someone about how white bread makes them feel is very odd. Just as the man in the video felt when he was asked if white bread consumption brought on feelings of loneliness. Looking at it from the perspective of the company however, asking a question like this makes sense. No one wants to be the brand of bread that is associated with lonely, or furthermore a more descriptive adjective such as dissatisfied. So using a technique such as this to isolate the feeling consumers have about their product is very important.

On every college campus women are being sexually assaulted, and hardly ever is anyone reporting, not even the victim. The image of the five symbols of women in a row with the statement, "One in Five Women will be a victim of sexual assault during her college years" (rampage), underneath uses rhetorical devices like ethos, logos, and pathos to influence the reader and bring awareness to sexual assault in college women. Rhetoric, when used properly, can be a very effective communication skill. However, a large majority of students do not even understand proper rhetoric or even know what rhetoric is. Rhetoric should be taught in high schools because , while also giving students effective ways of influencing and interpreting culture. Understanding what rhetoric is can be very effective.
Throughout my junior year I’ll admit that I have grown in certain areas as a student academically. At the beginning of the year we were tasked with writing a rhetorical analysis essay for the cola wars and coming previously from a CPM class it was challenging trying to write an essay that I was not familiar with. Once I had received my essay back Ms.Miller explained exactly what i had done wrong and made it clear as to why received my score. After the meeting I was able to re-do my essay to correct errors I made to raise my score. Therefore, this is clearly not an example of human trafficking. After analyzing each sources use of the three most important components of human trafficking, the better piece is clear. Forced labor, captivity, and poor working conditions were all used as criterion for human trafficking in Noy Thrupkaew’s piece. “Slavery in the Fields” failed to meet even one of these criterion. Human trafficking is a very rampant problem, and we should not reduce it with loose interpretations of what constitutes it.
