Throughout the Autobiography of Malcolm X there are several key events the bring out the central ideas of the text. Some examples of the key events was when Mr. Ostrowski lectured Malcolm, when Malcolm was in jail and he learned the teachings of Elijah Muhammad, and when Malcolm made his pilgrimage to Mecca. A closer look at the central ideas would show that they build on one another. When Malcolm was going to school his teacher, Mr. Ostrowski, told home to give up his dream of being a lawyer,” Malcolm, one of life’s first needs is to be realistic.
Broadly, Malcolm’s main claim is that knowledge of history is very powerful and can help improve African Americans situation. He supports this main claim with four supplementary main ideas. First, black people cannot understand their current situation and change their future without understanding the past and how they got to that point. The second supplementary idea he addressed is that black people need to broaden their scope and understand that their situation isn’t a local problem but touches nationally. He states that African Americas need to understand that they are not the minority nationally and that the era of white people ruling the world has ended.
He speaks on behalf of political ties and in order to become a strong black nationalist community they must put aside other differences such as religion and etc. He specifically mentions the disregard of differences on behalf of feuds and wars caused by these differences within political, historic instances that have lead to failure. Throughout Malcolm X’s speech he references world wide politics that have been successfully achieved and can be similarly achieved within the current political revolution he’s attempting to rouse. As he states, “And it will take Black Nationalism - that to bring about the freedom of 22 million Afro-Americans here in this country where we have suffered colonialism for the past 400 years. America is just as much a colonial power as England ever was”.

The writer has a very laid back style of writing and the structure is relatively loose. The autobiography is written by telling the story of his life through major events and turning points of his life in chronological order.

In the year 1963 Martin Luther King was imprisoned for peacefully marching in a parade as a non-violent campaign against segregation. When Martin Luther King was arrested by police and sent to Birmingham Jail, a letter written by the clergymen that was directed towards him about why his march was wrong. In response to the letter by the clergymen, Martin Luther King wrote his own letter in response to the Clergymen’s to persuade them into believing that their reasons for putting him in jail were wrong by successfully using Parallelism, deductive reasoning, and alliteration. King uses his rhetorical devices to appeal to the ethos, logos, and pathos of the clergymen to further strengthen his claim. Martin Luther King effectively appeals to the emotion of the clergymen with his usage of parallelism, which repeats the structure and adds great emphasis.
From the first line of the speech Malcolm X mentions the assertion that Afro-Americans have the right to self-defense, which is a vile point of him bring up to notice inequality in the United States. Throughout the speech he constantly references that a black man is either “unable or unwilling” to defend themselves, due to the unfairness of how the government is viewing the Afro-American race. Malcolm was not a man who believed that the problem of the African Americans would be solved through a peaceful, quiet means and nuances, he believed the problem has graduated through the centuries and has come to a stage when the assertion of African Americans’ existence as humans has to be forcefully done or never. Whites-Blacks relations The relationship between the two races is practically the basis of the civil rights movement. From their rhetoric, it is clear that Martin Luther King and Malcom X held quite different views on the current and future relationship of Blacks and Whites in the United States. Martin Luther King knew that Blacks are the minority in the US and that they “cannot walk alone”. They need allies in the white majority to be able to achieve any changes.
Human rights activists, Malcolm X in his speech, Ballot or Bullets, published in 1964 addresses the topic of equality and argues that people must be politically intelligent and stand up against segregation. He supports this claim by using anaphora, then by using ethos and finally by using imagery. Malcolm’s purpose is to persuade his audience into standing up against white manipulation. He adopts a frustrated tone for his audience, the readers of Ballot or Bullets and others interested in the topic of black nationalist.
In “Learning to Read”, Malcolm X uses rhetorical analysis to argue how African Americans continued to struggle in gaining education due to racism. He informs people that through our history books, there have been modifications that restrain the truth about the struggles black people faced. Malcolm X encouraged his audience to strive to get the rights that they deserved. He demonstrates that knowledge is very important because the truth empowers us. In his interview he persuades his audience with diction, tone, pathos, ethos, and appeal to emotion to make his point.
Introduction: Malcom X urges the Negro community to fight to gain the equal rights they deserve by taking action against their white oppressors. He emphasizes that blacks will gain their rights either thorough voting, with the ballot, or else through the inevitable violence with the bullet. Thesis [part a] Like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., also fighting for the civil rights of black Americans in the 1960s, but in a more peaceful manner, Malcom X takes a different approach.
According to X, “The ballot or the bullet”... “Now in speaking like this, it doesn't mean that we're anti-white, but it does mean we're anti-exploitation,we're anti-degradation, we're anti-oppression. And if the white man doesn't want us to be anti-him, let him stop oppressing and exploiting and degrading us”(Malcolm #2). The essence of Malcolm’s argument is that he is not anti white, he is anti whites oppressing and disenfranchising African Americans and if the white person wants to not be hated, then he should stop hating himself. In a letter written in Mecca, Malcolm X says,“on this pilgrimage, what I have seen,and experienced, has forced me to re-arrange much of my thought-patterns previously held, and to toss aside some of my previous conclusions” (Malcolm X).
