Here at the Saratoga Springs chapter of NHS, we place tremendous value in the efforts of individuals to not only make a difference that they wish to see but also inspire others to do the same. With this in mind, it is my pleasure to introduce our guest speaker, Mr. Dave Brown. A graduate of Le Moyne University, Mr. Brown has become one of the most respected and highly regarded members of our Saratoga Springs Community. Whether teaching about his favorite President, James K. Polk, or dauntlessly leading his girls volleyball team into a sectional match, I have never failed to see Mr. Brown give less than one hundred percent. In my experience in his United States History course, I saw Mr. Brown’s ability to connect with each of his students.
In a time where many countries of the world were unsettled and feared another atomic bomb explosion, President John F. Kennedy was sworn into office on January 20, 1961 on a cold winter afternoon. He then proceeded to give an inaugural address that would last through the ages and inspire people not only in America, but also people around the world to unite together and achieve peace. His speech was eloquent and smooth, because of his use of many rhetorical strategies. He uses diction, appeals, parallelism and other literary devices all throughout the speech. President Kennedy wise use of diction greatly helped him appeal to the audiences.
The analysis I made was based on Douglas McGray’s article “Lost in America”. You did a great job starting your introduction in a creative way using a question as attention-grabber. It is an effective strategy to grab the reader’s attention. You briefly summarized the article’s main points; it provides readers a brief explanation of what will be further analyzed. You also established a very solid thesis statement with a purpose, audience and rhetorical device being analyzed.
Speeches are used to commemorate points of history, and inform the general public of the product of their history but what makes a speech so impacting on it’s audience? Rhetorical devices give speeches and works of literature a way that can convey feelings or ideas to a viewer. When addressing during times of war or chaos, people such as Ronald Reagan, Abraham Lincoln, and Winston Churchill used these terms to better connect with their audience. Without these tools of the english language, dialogue and literature would be all the more dull and unappealing. However, with these useful instruments, writers and speakers can better communicate through some of the many rhetorical devices.

The solution is to use stylistic techniques to help readers understand what characters are going through and highlight their struggles in a relatable way. The book All-American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely uses various stylistic techniques to develop a brutal tone. The tone of brutality is created by using such techniques as sentence structure, sensory details, and simile.
The speaker begins by describing autumn as the time of the year of fruit production and fogginess. The speaker states that autumn is a dear friend of the blossoming sun. The speaker reveals that autumn and the sun are plotting how to make fruit and how to ripen crops before they harvest. The speaker states how ripen of crops will lead to the droppings of seeds. The speaker imagines how the seeds will soon be flowers for the bees.

In the essay “City of Broken Dreams” author Sara Goldrick-Rab explains how she, and a team of researchers, gathered evidence to study the college costs of working-class students at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Sara Goldrick-Rab is a professor of sociology and medicine at Temple University. While she was at the University, she found devastating news and decided to take matters into her own hands.
Richard Louv, a novelist, in Last Child in the Woods (2008) illustrates the separation between humans and nature. His purpose to the general audience involves exposing how the separation of man from nature is consequential. Louv adopts a sentimental tone throughout the rhetorical piece to elaborate on the growing separation in modern times. Louv utilizes pathos, ethos and logos to argue that the separation between man and nature is detrimental.
Taylor Scuorzo d Rhetorical Analysis 3/20/23 Rhetorical Analysis Doing benevolent and selfless things for others can occasionally lead to adverse results. In his enlightening and illuminating commencement address given at Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on May 19, 2018, Jason Reynolds emotionally persuades and informs the graduates at the college through the use of anecdotes and metaphors to show that ignoring the significant problems of the world will not help us fix them. To strengthen his speech, Reynolds uses past personal experiences and the comparison of objects to others to help prove the theme portrayed throughout the speech.
As President Kennedy enters office he gives an speech on the celebration of freedom; symbolizing an end, as well as a beginning of a new nation. Kennedy rises for the opportunity for persuasion after his inauguration has been addressed and he scarcely beats nixon. President Kennedy uses his authority for persuasion to bring the american people together under his power. The president uses the experience of war,poverty,and the desire for peace to develop an emotional appeal between the U.S and the world population. In this speech Kennedy uses ethos,pathos,logos,as well as other rhetorical devices to convince the audience.
In this passage, Charlotte Perkins Gilman highlights the theme that women must use their intellect or go mad through the use of literary qualities and writing styles. Gilman also uses the use of capital letters to portray the decline in the narrators’ sanity. This shows the decline in the sanity of a person because the words in all-caps is shown as abrupt, loud remarks. Gilman uses this method multiple times in her short story and this method was used twice in this passage. When the narrator wrote, “LOOKING AT THE PAPER!”, the major decline in her mental health was shown.
