First, you did an excellent job with your essay. The format was easy to follow. However, I would suggest adding whether or not pathos and ethos are incorporated into the video “Drunk History: Claudette Colvin and Rosa Parks” in your first body paragraph. For example, Colvin and Parks being mistreated for not moving for a white passenger on the bus could represent pathos. Furthermore, I agree that logos is portrayed in this video through the organization and facts of the woman’s speech.
This adds to the style of the advertisement; this whole commercial has a dramatic feeling to it. Styles in advertisements can be anything from humorous to scientific. They provide creative direction and can be very effective if executed well (Pack, 2017). Not many words are spoken throughout the Budweiser advertisement; they do not need to be. The song “Stand by You” is played at the right pace throughout the commercial and gradually gets more cheerful towards the end once the cans of water are shipped off.
Pathos is when the speech appeals to the audience’s emotions. President Abraham Lincoln uses pathos is this speech to console the audience for the losses that the country has endured during the Civil War. Lincoln uses pathos to convey sadness when he says, “The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract.” When saying this Lincoln appeals to the people’s emotions by explaining that their loved ones struggled there and he also appeals to the feeling of pride they feel for their loved ones who dedicated their lives to their cause. Another example of pathos in this speech is, “...that from these honored dead we take increased devotion-that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain…”
The current meaning of pathos is having to do with emotions like happiness, sadness, and amazement. Advertisements often use pathos as a rhetorical strategy to get their audience to laugh and make their product seem more likable. Both the first and second commercials use an emotion that appeal to the majority of the population, humor. In Budweiser's 2014 Super Bowl commercial “Puppy Love” it tells one. The purpose of this commercial like any is to convince the audience of the message its promoting. In the advertisement it uses the three tools of ethical persuasion: logos, ethos, and pathos.
Pathos means to show emotions and feelings (Britannica Academic). The way Nike shows pathos in all of their advertisements and their “Just Do It” commercial is by the usage of a personal story, pictures, and the type of music that is played throughout the advertisement commercial. The clothing and shoe company uses inspiration, motivation, eagerness, excitement, and many other ideas to create an illusion to draw attention. When the intent of some of these are provided on a television, viewers want to keep watching and become interested. Throughout the video, slow music is not being played.
Pathos emotionally connects with the reader. Outliers shows many examples, one would be the story of 12-year-old Marita living in a one-bedroom apartment with her mom.
