Christian Luda Professor Candace Deal English 1101 Composition I Section 35 26 October 2015 (Rough Draft) Rhetorical Analysis for “In need for help” In the article “In need of help”, which was featured on “the Economist” website on November, 21 2012, undertook the challenge to argue that the American poor are in dire need of aid and support. The writer, or possible writers, from the Economist put the case forward that the America’s poor were forgotten about in the 2012 election campaign. Powerful pathos is established at the beginning with the first paragraph. Ms. Hamilton is introduced as an injured factory worker whose accident left her unable to work (par 1). This introduction sets the scene of melancholy to probably make the reader feel like the people who live in poverty due to their unfortunate circumstances. In the eight paragraph, perhaps the most humane, basic, and hardest hitting use of pathos is the statement, ““Poor” is a four letter word”. This puts all readers on the same level to show compassionate and the motivation to support and heal the poor. The personal stories that the economist use are very emotional and present a strong argument that Americans living in poverty need support. The emotionally charged word choice and language that is used allows that reader to understand the situation. Some of the words used are “lost”, “severe”, and “minimum wage” (par 2,3). The Economist further uses pathos with the inclusion of, “… still paying off a $2,100 loan…” because, many people are beginning to take out loans that they cannot pay back due to the failing economy not providing well-paying jobs. The Economist professionally layers the article together with concise specific parts that each a have their own moral story. Throughout the article, The Economist is very confident in presenting their data and information. As mention before, the stories appeal to both pathos and ethos. These stories are gloomy but, they provide the foundation to apply morals and values to help these individuals. These statements, “chronic poverty remains relatively rare”, “The finical crisis made things worse…” shows descriptive and politically charged statements (par 12).
