Tina Tran Period: 03 English III AP Illiteracy Good or Bad In the feature article “Is Illiteracy So Bad” the author, Scott Douglas, gives his point of view about literacy and is it really important. Douglas states that literacy has many flaws and that a world without books or libraries would give the government more opportunities, financially, to open more useful facilities such as community weightlifting centers or television center. Douglas suggest that since a society has gone illiterate, there is no need for a letter keyboard. Douglas suggest that since we can no longer read or write, we should use images or illustration instead. Douglas concludes his article by saying that since we are an advancing society, in the near future there will be more computer screens than book so why not make use of the opportunities that we have. …show more content…
Johnson report that over one third of London school children at the age of eleven aren’t able to read or write accurately and that over twenty percent are still having difficulties’ as they leave secondary school. Johnson claims that children’s who are illiterate tends to turn to crimes as they have low self-confidence. Many of these children’s, when presented with a situation where they have to engage in either reading or writing, tend to shy away and feel ashamed of themselves. As a final point, Johnson suggest that the education board should bring back the synthetic phonics
