Frank Rich maintains a critical tone throughout the entire article. His use of short sentences such as “Actually, no. People don’t change” and the word “minions” to describe Hilary Clinton in the first section shows his discontent with the candidate. Rich continues his critical tone as he discusses the other candidates. The use of words such as “bigoted”, “cowering”, and “off-the-wall” show that Rich is angry at the majority of the candidates.
Throughout Abigail Adams letter, uses of rhetorical strategies and devices are presented to advise and give her son advice. Being a part of the upper class and her husband being a U.S. diplomat and later becoming president, her strength of knowledge and authority is high. Because of how successful Adams' husband is, she hopes her son will follow in his footsteps. Various rhetorical strategies throughout Adam's essay will be used to identify hints and present advice to her son for future reference.

All of Pitt’s little pieces come to make a whole: his style. He creates an effective article and style through his various rhetorical devices. All of this different parts come together to make a united whole, like baking a cake, writing a book, or making a computer. To make a more compelling piece and have an exceptional writing style one must use many rhetorical devices.
In the article written by Carl McCoy he talks about how it’s unwise to do the thing that we love most. He talks about how finding the job that you love may not be the best thing for you. McCoy acknowledges that you may have a lower paying job and love what you do but he also admits he attempted to be a starving artist for awhile. He points out that there is nothing special about do the thing that you love.
Building a new country takes bravery and courage. In this time period (when the U.S. was very trying to stand on its own) many famous political figures helped organize and support our country. One man was John Quincy Adams and he was going to be the president. He did not always possess the strength needed to keep our country going, but some great advice from his mom, Abigail Adams, helped. Adams used many rhetorical devices in her letter to her son to explain how trials and struggles can mold a man into a hero.
Recognizing the enormity of conflict can often be difficult. In lines 41-73 of Book 22 of the Odyssey, Homer uses diction and juxtaposition of language to contrast the calm and flattery tone of Eurymachus with the harsh and stark tone of Odysseus, and to illustrate the magnitude of the conflict, as well as dialogue to illuminate conflict between the suitors and Odysseus. Homer utilizes these literary techniques to underscore the tension between the characters in the passage. Book 22 begins with Odysseus confronting the suitors about his dismay at them for occupying his palace with Penelope while he departed. Eurymachus then uses a calm tone full of flattery in an attempt to mitigate the conflict with Odysseus.
Rhetorical strategies are a variety of parts that make up an essay. The strategies include everything from explaining a process, to structure of writing. Whether the author 's purpose is to entertain, inform, or persuade, ultimately these strategies will strengthen not only the author’s purpose, but also the writing itsef. Typically when authors use these strategies, they are very precise to how they use them, and when deeply analysing a piece of writing, this is very clear. In Bell Hooks’ “Understanding Patriarchy”, she used rhetorical strategies to convey her purpose.
The Catcher in the Rye Salinger gave the tone of the book humorous so that the book can be more relatable to teenagers in society. He talks about how Holden is lonely and he’s lost like every other teenager but he more like he doesn’t see from the real world. He is judgmental, he judges everything he sees and knows. Salinger writes this book to let us know what some teenagers go through and how people stay strong no matter what. He’s wanting us to know how teenagers are all different and they go through different things and they act a certain way because of what they’re going through.

Mark Antony was a friend and follower of Julius Caesar. After Brutus gave his speech explaining to Rome why he killed Caesar, Antony walks in with Caesar’s body and begans to give a speech of his own. Mark Antony says, “The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones. ”(Ⅲ.Ⅱ. 3-4), which explains that people will always remember the bad that you did rather than remember the good. His purpose to the general audience involves exposing how the separation of man from nature is consequential. Louv adopts a sentimental tone throughout the rhetorical piece to elaborate on the growing separation in modern times. Louv utilizes pathos, ethos and logos to argue that the separation between man and nature is detrimental.

Hillenbrand demonstrated the main idea throughout the book by using rhetorical devices such as diction, syntax, imagery, and tone. Hillenbrand’s use of these rhetorical devices contribute to the book Unbroken by emphasizing the main character, Louis “Louie” Zamperini’s, life before, during, and after becoming a prisoner of war.
I’ve always dreaded going to English. I never really saw the point, I guess. And, to be honest, I didn’t put very much effort into learning how to write an effective argument, or any essay for that matter. However, I always received good grades, so I was oblivious to my writing deficiencies. I thought I could get by with mediocre writing skills.
