In the, “Ad Industry Veterans Honored With Cola War Memorial” article by The Onion, the critic is satirically touching on the subject of the “Cola War” and how people exaggerate on that topic. The critic explains how the competition between the two Cola companies rose to another level of competition. It’s satirically judging that competition among the two companies comparing the rivalry among the companies with the actual war happening at that time. Throughout the article the author’s tone is exaggerating and ironic which helps him convey his message. With that tone, those who take part in the “war” can infer that the critic thinks that they give more importance to things that are insignificant, instead of paying close attention to the real issues occurring. In some of the paragraphs the writer uses diction linked to war and the “horrible” events of the “Cola War”. With the different negative diction, the critic is illustrating how others described the “war”. Some of the words used are “bitter”, “horrible”, “grieve”, “scars”, and “brutal”. The purpose of using these words is to make it seem like the “war” was a “catastrophic” event. However, the critic uses the words in order to convey the message that those taking part in the “war” took it too far when they describe the event in such a negative way. The use of those words connects back to the exaggeration that is used by the “war” participants to describe it. So the critic uses it as a way reflect that the “war” was not horrible or bitter like those who took part in it describe. The writer is being ironic when using the words, so they don’t actually mean that it was like that. That way with the irony the participants grasp that the situation is being criticized and not seen as a serious matter in the writer's point of
