Take Off of The Obesity Crisis Being overweight has been a concern of the US government and citizens for a while now. Many people have been debating about how the obesity crisis has been affecting people and businesses. Who's fault is it and how can we solve the problem are questions often asked by concerned citizens, the government and most importantly overweight people. If these groups can figure out how to solve the overweight crisis we are having, it could ultimately save lives. In his article “Being Fat is Ok” Paul Campos, a law professor at the University of Colorado, talks about how he believes the BMI and the diet industry, are both just scams to make the government and diet industries money. In an article published by the Harvard School of Public Health, the authors claim that muscle and bone are more dense than fat, this makes weight gain as an adult an important determinant of weight-related health—few adults add muscle and bone after their early twenties, so nearly all that added weight is fat (HSPH). Now Campos proclaims he runs quite a bit and is great physical health, but he is an adult and some of his weight may not be muscle. The BMI is not a great determining factor in trying to see if you are overweight or not, although it does give you a good idea of where you are at. The first lie is "We know that fat people are less healthy than thin people because they are fat." Campos declares that there is no solid scientific bases around this claim and that no studies show that being over-weight and having health issues correspond. He also argues that obesity is a made up disease and has no connection to health issues. But being overweight has been linked to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke and many more diseases. The second lie is "We know that fat people would be as healthy as thin people if they lost weight." Campos argues that one cannot know whether losing weight will help or hurt a person, and one person could be at an increased health risk then someone who is the same weight just because they dropped weight. We can not say they will be as healthy as thin people depending on any health problems they got while overweight. But, they will be much healthier then overweight people and how they were before. The last lie is "Fat people can choose to be thinner." Campos shows that diets often end in failure, as his statistics show 90-98% of people on diets do not succeed. Campos also points out that people who were on diets end up weighing more then their comparable groups that never started dieting. The main reason people on diets do not succeed is because they believe just eating or not eating certain things, or taking a pill is
