Imagine the country you live in being so war stricken, that you and your family have no choice but to flee in order to save your lives. Sadly, this is the reality for 33,952 people around the world daily who are being forced to leave behind their home in fear of being killed or tortured (Mufleh). Luma Mufleh, an immigrant from Jordan, filmed her Ted talk in April of 2017. She is getting people to understand that it is important and vital for us to take refugees into countries all around the world. She also claims that when these immigrants get to their new home, wherever that may be, that we believe in and encourage them instead of feeling bad for them and giving them handouts. She herself knows the struggle of being not only a refugee, but also a Muslim in the United States. She wants people to be able to look at her and other peoples story and know how difficult it is for immigrants coming into new countries: “It’s important that I speak about us, that I speak about your journeys, about my journey. People need to know” (Mufleh). This tells us that it’s very important for her to explain to people who may not be familiar with immigrants and immigration, and enlighten them that it is a very stressful and scary time for people coming into a new country and leaving everything that they know behind. She talks about how upsetting it was for her coming to an unfamiliar place by saying, “I was no longer a Jordanian citizen, but I wasn’t American, either.
