As the election gets closer, the message from one of the candidates about certain minority groups have progressively gotten worse over time. This particular candidate is billionaire businessman Donald Trump. Last year when Trump made comments about Mexican authorities sending rapists and murderers across the U.S. and Mexican border illegally, and doing harm to our citizens. The tone and rhetoric in which Mr. Trump used in this context sent a chill throughout the country, and put unfair focus on the Hispanic community. How can a person with that much money relate to an ordinary person? The United States has made great strides towards bringing awareness towards diversity, but with how this political campaign has been shaping up, it has caused a divide not only between political parties, but in race relations as well. Trump’s average supporter does not have anything in common with him except for what the words that come from his mouth. Mr. Trump is popular with people who are against immigration, have fallen behind on these hard economic times, and do not hold a college degree (Guo, 2015). Just recently, he made comments about banning all Muslims from entering the United States after a recent mass shooting in California that was committed by Islamic radicals. This would almost be like banning a whole group of people based on nationality like the United States did with the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 (Takaki, 1993). Something like this has no merit and is racist at best. Trump stated in a CNN interview (Scott, 2015) that he has Muslim friends who are “happy that he is discussing Islamic fundamentalism but that they do not support his decision to ban Muslim immigration to the U.S.” You would think that if had had Muslim “friends,” he would think before he spoke, but this obviously is not the case with Trump.
