Amy Tan, the author of Fish Cheeks, has a B.A., double major in English and Linguistics, and an M.A. in linguistics. Amy Tan directly uses Imagery and simile in her narrative essay Fish Cheeks, Imagery is a vivid language designed to appeal to the five senses, which simile gives compassion between objects. Amy Tan uses Imagery in her essay, to create vivid descriptions. In paragraph three Tan describes cod as, “A slimy rock cod with bulging eyes that pleaded not to be thrown into a pan of hot oil” (Par. 3.). Tan specifically describes,“Tofu, which looked like stacked wedges of rubbery white sponges” (Par.3.). Tan uses simile to describe the food on the table; she compares Tofu to a white sponge. Tan does this to help the reader understand why Robert and his family might think it’s weird.
