“So I started this talk talking about the tush, so I’ll end with the bottom line, which is, walk and talk” (2:59). This quote is pulled directly from the speech by Nilofer Merchant, she is qualified to speak on this topic because she has personal experiences with what she is talking about, she is walking the talk. She has had a family member die from not getting enough exercise in his day to day life, and now she makes it a point to have people in her meetings get up and walk. Merchant gave the speech, “Got Meeting? Take a Walk,” on TED Talk on April 29th, 2013. The speech was about how unhealthy it is for people to sit as much as they do in a day. She was talking about health issues that are caused from sitting and offering her solution that she uses in her life. Merchant’s goal in this speech was to convince people that sitting all day was affecting their health, and trying to persuade the audience to walk more during work. For some people in the audience, the statistics are what is going to persuade them most. The first piece the speaker uses is, “Things like breast cancer and colon cancer are directly tied to our lack of physical activity, Ten percent in fact, on both of those”(0:54). She uses a statistic to back up a scary statement regarding the effects of the lack of physical activity, which strengthens the claim. This also uses tone, when the speaker is talking about this she is saying it in a harsh manner when talking about serious scary things to help get the point across. Another point where logos was used was, “Six percent for heart disease, seven percent for type 2 diabetes” (0:54).
