Harvey Milk, was the first openly gay official to join the Board of Supervisors. On Gay Freedom Day in California, Harvey Milk gave an empowering speech to the different minorities to encourage them to step up and show them who they really are. Harvey Milk wrote this speech during a time it weighed heavy on his heart. Harvey Milk uses rhetorical strategies such as logos, tone, and syntax to support his claim of addressing minorities afraid to step out; that they need to come and show who they really are. As Harvey Milk spoke he used logos to show reasoning to uplift his assertion. Harvey Milk uses logos to create a sense of logic when he talks about Anita Bryant. The text states “ About six months ago, Anita Bryant in her speaking to God said that the drought in California was because of the gay people. On November 9, the day after I got elected, it started to rain.” This shows how Anita wanted to blame gay people for things they cannot control, but Harvey Milk “proved” her wrong when it rained the day he got elected; many people know that a specific group of people cannot control the weather and it illogical for her to blame them. Milk's speech states “In San Francisco elections we’re asking -- at least we hope to ask -- that the U.S. government put pressure on the closing of the South African consulate.” This shows how Harvey Milk not only acknowledged the gay community, but he considers the different countries going though a hard time and wanting to make things right.
