In the excerpt from Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Dream” speech (Option B), he uses strong connotative diction to educate those in the audience who are not undergoing the hardships that African Americans are. King’s strongest use of connotative diction can be found in paragraphs 5 and 6. In paragraph 5, King refers to a “dark desolate valley of segregation” which is directly mirroring psalms 23; the quote is significant because King is widely known for being a preacher, and through this quote, he has specifically chosen those words to bring his persuasion to the next level. It also describes the Jim Crow laws and the busboy cot from 1955. The paper also analyzes Martin Luther King’s speech I have a dream with the purpose of rhetorical devices and how well they have been used in the speech, and how Afro-Americans’ conditions have been at the time. This involved many African American citizens to take verbal and physical abuse from the police and not being able to do anything about it. In the middle of the 1990’s, the United Sates was dealing with internal problems of citizens’ rights to political and social freedom and equality. Mainly these rights of African-Americans citizens. Although all men and women at this time were legally considered free and equal, these rights were still unjustly denied to the African-American people throughout society. In order to stand for equality, civil rights activists and supporting groups started to emerge. One well known leader during this time was Martin Luther King Jr., a black American Baptist minister.

Martin Luther King Jr. utilizes imagery to give the audience a strong picture of the current situation. He begins his speech with mentioning a founding father and the Emancipation Proclamation, stating, “this momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared by the flames of withering injustice.”
On April 4, 1968, Robert F. Kennedy gave his remarks on the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Robert’s goal was to inform people on Martin Luther King’s journey and to strengthen people’s attitudes on the whole situation. Robert’s main points throughout the speech were how the country as a whole should move forward, why the states should not resort to violence but unity instead, and he also addressed that the country needed unity, love, and compassion.
Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the most influential leaders of his time and played a crucial role in the African-American Civil Rights movement. Luther was a charismatic leader who took a firm stand against the oppressive and racist regime of the United States (US), devoting much of his life towards uniting the segregated African-American community of the US.
