Krista Masoner Composition I Essay 3 March 5, 2023 Essay 3 In Judy Brady’s essay “I Want a Wife” she writes about the unfair treatment of wives in marriage and it has become a classic for women’s rights and the feminist movement. Although it’s written in the 70’s this article still has an inspiring impact on women’s treatment today. She exposes the unfair treatment of wives in marriages during that time and exposes the demands and pressure put on women by their husbands. This treatment is still prevalent in today’s society unfortunately, although it has improved, the same themes of inequality in marriage is still there. It really put Brady’s words into perspective and explained how she was able to get such an emotional response from her readers. The ethos explains her credibility as she is a wife and mother herself and has pulled her information from personal experiences. The pathos describes the emotion she wants readers to feel, like the anger and frustration caused by the treatment of women. While, logos explains her clear and concise arguments that women are expected to do too much. Throughout the essay she gives compelling arguments and examples of the extreme tasks women are expected to do and, “After listing all this numerous outrageous tasks, she concludes the article with an emotional statement, “My God, who wouldn’t want a wife?”” (Rhetorical analysis of I want a Wife). This is a powerful ending to her essay and clearly wraps up the incredible amount of stress woman must face in an unequal marriage, through her irony.
