Combs 1 Daniel Combs Katherine Madden English 102 6 February 2017 “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” In the previous couple of decades, technology as a whole has been taking over everyone’s lives in many different ways. Now does this mean it was actually better for us or does it just prevent us from learning? In some ways it makes our lives easier. In the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” writer Nicholas Carr gives us an insight as to his beliefs about google and the internet as a whole. This is a topic that can certainly be argued from both sides. The internet is its own creature, and having this resource can inhibit people and how they learn or find answers. Carr uses a great amount of examples and also tries to prove his idea as to why what he says is correct. He took a stand on this topic. Throughout this paper I will be analyzing the rhetorical strategies Carr uses to support his main argument while I state why I believe his point is very intriguing and persuasive. Carr says, “The kind of deep reading that a sequence of printed pages promotes is valuable not just for the knowledge we acquire from the authors words but for the intellectual vibrations those words set off within our own minds… Deep reading, as Maryanne Wolf argues, is indistinguishable from Deep thinking.” (Carr). He is showing that there is indeed a difference between how people read online versus a physical book. This allows Carr to show his audience that words such as “reading” are not the same across the board. This is just another strategy Carr uses to back up his point that the internet is ruining how we are supposed to traditionally process
