Through former President John F. Kennedy’s 1962 speech, Kennedy emphasizes the need to fight against inflation in the United States. In order to convince the American people of this, he vilifies the steel corporations and stresses how everybody will be affected by increased steel prices. To open the speech, Kennedy immediately shaped the steel corporations as evil. He describes the increasing steel prices as “wholly unjustifiable and irresponsible defiance of the public interest.” He does so to identify the enemy before he even begins. By building up the steel corporations to be corrupt with negative interests, Kennedy’s audience is more likely to heed his warning. This is a common theme throughout the entire speech.
