The world has developed in many areas such as in gender, sexual, and racial rights. Shirley Chisholm stands as one of these individuals in history that has paved a path to equality. Her Presidential bid, delivered on January 25, 1972, is one moment cemented in history. This paper will analyze that speech by examining her pathos, logos, and ethos. Pathos is Greek for an appeal of emotion.

In her speech, Elizabeth Glaser convinces people and leaders in America that they need to acknowledge and respect the real dangers of AIDS and the victims that have it. Glaser effectively uses ethos, repetition, and tone to convey this message to the audience. Elizabeth Glaser, the woman who brought awareness of AIDS, takes a stance based on her own experience with AIDS. In order to help the audience to believe her, at the beginning of her speech, Glaser tells the audience that she “Had unknowingly passed it to [her] daughter, Ariel, through [her] breast milk, and [her] son, Jake, in utero”. In order to build Elizabeth Glaser’s ethos, Glaser talks about how she and her children aren’t the “typical” or “expected” people to contract AIDS.
Carrie Chapman Catt was one of the most profound leaders in the fight for women’s suffrage. Catt achieved the 19th Amendment in the early 1900s, this amendment allowed women to be involved in political elections including voting. To ensure the right for women to vote could be in full effect, she addressed the all-male Congress in a speech. In this speech, Catt uses emotional (pathos) and logical (logos) appeals to her audience, along with various examples of syntax (repetition) in the structure of her sentences. She also informs her audience of the sequential events that have led up to the fight for women’s suffrage.

I believe that her main ideas are to remind the students that success is not defined by social expectations by unique personal goals when listening to her speech! In Letter From Birmingham Jail, Martin Luther king Jr. argues that black people should earn their freedom by themselves instead of waiting for the perfect chance and timing. First, he believes that he is “compelled to carry the gospel of freedom beyond my particular home town” (p1). According to this, he believes that he is the one who will bring freedom to America. Socrates also states that is searching the truth and bring it to the people. He asks people what is the virtue and tell them the truth.
Woman Suffrage Women's right activist, Carrie Catt, in her speech, “Address to Congress on Women’s Suffrage”, explains how woman suffrage in inevitable. Catt’s purpose is to convince Congress that it is time for woman suffrage. She adopts a confident tone , uses direct quotations, and appeals to logos in order to convince Congress that it is time for woman suffrage. A confident tone is adopted by Catt throughout her entire speech to congress. Catt opens with “Woman suffrage is inevitable.”
For a very long time, the voting rights of the citizens have been a problem in the US. It started out with only men with land being able to vote, and then expanded to white men, and then to all men. However, women were never in the situation, they were disregarded and believed to not be worthy enough to have the same rights as men. They were essentially being treated as property, therefore having no rights. But, in Susan B. Anthony’s speech, she hits upon the point that women are just as righteous as men.

Standing in front of a crowd of fascinated people, she uses pathos to capture their compassion. Hillary Rodham Clinton delivered her speech “Women’s Rights are Human Rights” September 5, 1995 while speaking at the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China with the intent to educate and spread awareness in regards to the rights and treatment of women around the world, while encouraging women to take initiative and highlight the potential women have if presented with the opportunity of equality. Early in Clinton’s speech, she uses the power of ethos to establish her credibility and continues to build upon it throughout, bringing attention to the fact she has had years of experience fighting for change among people of all kinds. Clinton convinces listeners that she has made women’s rights a priority in her life

Introduction On September 4th, 2012, the First Lady Michelle Obama gave a speech about the values of the American Dream. Within her speech she talks about her past and how she shares the same values as the president of the United States of America - her husband, Barack Obama. She talks about why she is proud to be an American and why being the First Lady has changed her life forever. A main focus in the speech is how The American Dream is partly about working to not only make one's own life better, but also to work in order for children and grandchildren of the future to have better opportunities.
