Paul Bogard is very convincing in “Let There Be Dark” he uses various methods and figurative language in order to convince the audience that darkness is necessary. By appealing to the reader’s emotions, logic, and to his credibility Paul Bogard builds a strong argument. The author uses logic to help make his argument more convincing. For example, in the first paragraph he uses a study to prove his point. “But now 8 out of 10 children born in the United Sates will never know a sky dark enough for the Milky Way” by using numbers he appeals to the audiences’ logic. Throughout the essay he uses other facts, and numbers to make his argument credible and logical. By mentioning well known and resourceful organizations he plants a seed of trust …show more content…

By mentioning that life threatening disease may happen because of too much light and not enough darkness, this makes the reader think about their life and want to make a change. If somebody said “you’re eating too bad, if you want to live start eating healthier” you’re obviously going to want to eat healthier and make a change. That’s exactly the method Paul Bogard is using. He is using a scaring tactic by mentioning life threatening diseases that are caused by the lack of darkness he is trying to get you to make a change and agree with his argument. By saying “Our bodies need darkness to produce the hormone melatonin, which keeps certain cancers from developing, and our bodies need darkness for sleep” in paragraph three he makes the reader scared and aware of the dangers of using too much light. He motivates the readers to turn off the lights earlier and think about the consequences when they leave a light on. The author also persuades the audience by appealing to his own credibility. When Paul Bogard mentions statistics, family members, and personal details about his life this automatically helps him create a connection with the audience.
