The next rhetorical appeals are logos and ethos. Logos deals with persuading the audience through the use of logic and reason. Logos can be stated by using facts, statistics, and evidence to back up your information. Logos was used in this article when President Andrew D White stated, “Some players grew their hair long to provide a modicum of head protection” (Zimmerman 2014). Some studies showed that if their hair was longer it would provide more padding when they would collide with each other. Another example of logos in this article was when Yale coach Walter Camp said, “The most controversial innovation was forward pass, which would spread players more widely and decrease the amount of contact between them” (Zimmerman 2014). The rhetorical appeal kairos means when the author addresses the timeliness of an argument. The kairos in this editorial is actually when the author published this editorial. The kairos in this article was demonstrated when the author says, “As millions of American boys and young men take to our football fields this fall…”(Zimmerman 2014). The editorial was published in September which is in fall and that is about the time when the NFL and college football season begins. The author’s timeliness was very good and thought out when he was writing this editorial because this was the time when everyone was getting ready for the football season. The next rhetorical appeal is telos which focuses on establishing the specific end to an argument. When working with telos it’s always good to ask yourself, “Does the author provide a clear senses of purpose in his/her argument?" The author’s telos in this was to persuade the readers about football and all the bad things that can happen while engaging in such a contact sport. The main goal of this was to bring awareness to people all over and the author did just that. The issue made it back to the White House and President Obama had a meeting with coaches, doctors, and scientists to talk about some of these dangers. And it did just that. Johnathan Zimmerman’s article “Football: Unsafe at any Level” really showcased each and every one of the rhetorical appeals. This editorial should be read by coaches, parents and as well as the football player themselves. This editorial will help the reader understand the dangers of the game. Not only does it teach you about the dangers, it also showcase that people are working to improve the game to make it more safe for everyone involved in the sport. Football has always been a dangerous sport but I know as time progress the sport will become a lot safer with all the money being donated for safety training for coaches. Zimmerman’s credibility and his use of the five rhetorical appeals really helped persuade the readers on how serious this topic is and I agree with everything that was said in this
