Mayor Michael Nutter delivered his speech “Speech at mount Carmel Baptist Church’’ August 7, 2011 at Mount Carmel Baptist Church to inform the public on his action to take place on the teenage violence in Philadelphia. Mayor Nutter had a tone that was serious and straight forward. Nutter used Pathos throughout his speech to connect with his audience on an emotional level. He spoke honesty to his town on stopping violence that teenagers are causing. He holds the parents accountable of teaching their kids and keeping them out of the streets. Mayor Nutter started off his speech stating a bible verse with respect of being in a church. Starting off with the bible verse will grab the audience attention because they are a church congregation. He spoke about how he came upon Mount Carmel church stating “The first time I came to Mount Carmel Baptist church was on May 12th, 1985. I was working on a political campaign. And many of us, of course, remember the events of that day and the next day”, he used pathos stating an emotional day that happened in Philadelphia. Nutter stated “You need to get home to your kids before we have to. Parents who neglect their children, who don't know where they are, don't know what they're doing, don't know who they're hanging out with -- you're going to find yourselves spending some quality time with your kids in jail -- together. If parents aren’t doing their job to teach their kids right from wrong they will be punished with their children.
