The New York Times is well-known newspaper that has been published in New York City since 1851. It leads all newspapers in Pulitzer Prizes with 122, and it ranked 18th in the world circulation. The paper has a popular section for editorials to be written for the public to read. The editorial “Mr. Trump’s Attack on Birth Control” was posted on October 6, 2017. Since President Trump has been in office many of his decisions have been controversial. One of the biggest issues at hand, is President Trump’s urge to reverse Obama’s Affordable Care Act, which happens to be what this editorial is about. This editorial’s audience is everyone who reads The New York Times, and it most directly relates to women. In “Mr. Trump’s Attack on Birth Control,” the authors discuss why they believe President Trump is wrong in taking away the Affordable Care Act. They effectively use ethos, pathos, and logos in their argument about President Trump’s actions to make access to birth control harder for women. They start by explaining, “On Friday, it rolled back an Obama-era rule requiring most employers to provide their employees with birth control coverage without co-payments. The mandate, established under the Affordable Care Act, has helped millions of women avoid unwanted pregnancy by eliminating out-of-pockets costs for contraception” (The New York Times Editorial Board, 2017). This gave the reader the necessary background knowledge and facts to understand the issue at hand. Then they go on to state, “Under new rules, the Departments of Health and Human Services, Treasury and Labor will make it easier for employers to deny contraception coverage if they have a ‘religious or moral objection’ to doing so” (The New York Times Editorial Board, 2017).
