Kim 1 Gyurim Kim Professor Hellmers ENG 1101- English Composition 1 1 July 2023 Rhetorical Analysis Why did Target remove some LGBTQ clothes right before pride month? Recently, Target removed some LGBTQ-themed merchandise from their stores just days before Pride month. I was intrigued by this decision and decided to investigate further. Using AllSides Headline Roundup, I found three articles and I am eager to learn more about this subject and broaden my understanding of the LGBTQ community. This can be seen when the author states “intense backlash from some customers who confronted workers and tipped over displays.” The author also uses Bias by Story Choice and Placement and presents the perspective of Target employees. However, the author fails to address the actions of those responsible for the violent act. “Target said that customers knocked down Pride displays at some stores, angrily approached workers and posted threatening videos on social media from inside the stores.” (Innocenzio) This shows how they failed to establish the other perspective and made the people that did this the bad guys. Regarding rhetorical appeals, this article employs the use of logos, as evidenced by the statement “Target confirmed that it has moved its Pride merchandise from the front of the stores to the back in some Southern stores…” (Innocenzio) This statement is presented as a fact, backed by Target’s confirmation that they have indeed moved objects from the front to the back of their stores. Despite the bias and unsubstantiated claims, the article includes direct quotes from Target, lending credibility to the information. Its primary objective seems to be providing an accurate account of the incident. However, it fails to show the full extent of Target's financial losses, possibly due to their magnitude loss. The article also isn’t entirely fair, as it lacks a balanced perspective.
