Abraham Lincoln wrote the second Inaugural Address on March 4th, 1865. The Civil War was a couple months from ending at this point. This speech was very strong and consists of numerous rhetorical devices. The Inaugural Address appeals mainly to pathos, uses allusion, parallel sentences, and figurative language. President Lincoln’s purpose was to persuade the audience to come together despite the war.

President Dwight Eisenhower was the president of the United States from 1953 to 1961. Before assuming his role as president, Eisenhower was an active member of the United States military. He served as a military aide to General Pershing and to General MacArthur. During World War II, Eisenhower worked his way up to become the Supreme Commander of Operation Overlord, which was the Allied assault on Nazi-occupied Europe. After noticing Eisenhower’s great success, President Truman asked him to run together in the presidential campaign with Truman being the vice presidential candidate.
The United States of America is faced with many problems and concerning topics every year. Every citizen holds on tightly to their own beliefs and viewpoints, ultimately hoping the nation’s leader can lead the country in the right direction. Every election year, the next presidential candidate gives an important speech, known as the inaugural address. In this address, the candidate informs the nation of his or her intentions as the president. In these inaugural speeches, the upcoming presidents use many different rhetorical strategies to get their main points to the citizens of the country.
During his time as President, Abraham Lincoln ambitiously attempted to assist the American people in realizing their own commonalities as one Nation and consequently trying to change within themselves. He hope this would cause the Nation to shift their outlook collectively. This was done by emphasizing their inner humanity, acknowledging their similarities to help them make a change in the country, and helping them to realize the major issues that were tearing the people apart. In a time of turmoil between the southern and northern parts of the country, Abraham Lincoln emphasized the inherit humanity of the American people to try and create a sense of unity.
Similar to MLK ’s I have a dream speech, Obama alternates between describing the problems of the world (appealing to people’s sympathy) and describing his hope for the future which inspires people. In this speech, Obama doesn’t lay out his plans for how he plans to achieve these goals, or explain why he is worthy of this office, he inspires people to believe in him because that will gain him more support than anything
Given that he spoke for the American people, he implies that as a nation, we have had to make some difficult choices, but, yet we make those decisions with courage and determination that keeps us united. This is one of the many points that highlights his speech. Giving positive and strong statements adds strength to his speech which keeps his audience occupied with his words. Obama’s purpose is to express his gratitude for his opportunity to become president and discuss his plans for economic advancement. In order to reach the American people of the U.S., Obama adopts a serious and thought-provoking tone to urge them to support his plans for advancement. During this time of economic crisis, Obama clearly conveys to the American people through his use of metaphor, allusion, and anaphora, that it is time to take a stand and make a change in America.

Barack Obama’s win for President in 2009 was a historical moment for the United States. His inaugural speech was much anticipated, because this was going to set the tone for his presidency. His speech told the American people that improving the economy is one of his priorities, but there were also other areas he would like to improve like healthcare and the education system. This was a speech that was meant to persuade the American public to take action for them to rise as a nation again, and for them to put their trust into him. He begins by building his credibility by showing that others who doubted the people of his country, tonight was their answer, and telling an anecdote about a old lady who had seen the country progress. Ultimately at the end, he ends his speech strongly by making the audience say “Yes, we can”, and getting applauded by the audience. In his speech, he focused on the major issues facing the United States and the world, all echoed through his campaign slogan of change. He also Madelyn Dunham, who died just two nights earlier.
