On April 14, 2016 Sarah Deer presented a speech about rape culture in Native American Reservations. The speech was called The Beginning and End of Rape: Confronting Sexual Violence in Native America. The purpose of this speech was to inform college students, university professors, and community members on the ongoing problem of sexual violence within Native American Reservations. The specific goal of this speech was to raise awareness and to educate the audience on the topic of rape culture in Native American Reservations. The statistic was 46% of Native American Women have been raped in their life time. This meant that 1 and 3 Native American were a victim of sexual violence. This helped further idea that rape culture is a common occurrence in Native American reservations. She proceed to explain how the tribal justice system worked. She made a very interesting point about tribal law of the past. She pointed out that tribes in the past would not stand for sexual violence against their women. These men were punished based off the women wished. Many forms of these punishments included banishment, and death. This information was quite shocking to the audience because of the rape culture engraved into native reservations. She spoke this point to show that it wasn’t always like this for Native Women. She than asked questions to what factors could have caused the sudden change in the culture of the Native Americans. Sarah Deer informed the audience that she believed there were certain events that caused this shift in native culture. She believed forced migrations, military confinement camps, boarding schools, and living in military dominated area created these
