Women only got the right to vote in the early 1900s and even after this, the gender inequality issue is still a prominent problem today. At the Commission on the Status of Women event, UN Executive Director Sima Bahous uses lists and repetition to convey her message that gender inequality is a problem and women need to force change to achieve a future of equality. Bahous starts by using lists to inform her audience of the problems in society regarding gender inequality and the challenges equality is facing. She also discusses her end goal of equality. Furthermore, Bahous uses lists to discuss her end goal of equality. This end goal is “peace, a planet in balance, and to advance the promises of the Sustainable Development Goals”. These end goals will connect to her call to action using lists in this circumstance, making these goals extremely clear to the audience. The use of lists as a rhetorical strategy helps Bahous explain the gender inequality issue and helps her connect to her call to action. Next, Bahous uses repetition to emphasize how important it is to achieve equality for the future. At the end of her speech, Bahous repeated the phrase “equal, sustainable, and peaceful future” to motivate the audience to take action on gender inequality issues and to “push forward together”. One important action Bahous wants these women to take is “... holding inclusive, open spaces for dialogue to build trust, common positions, and collaborative ways forward”. By using repetition, Bahous can motivate her audience to take specific actions, especially like this one. Bahous’s use of repetition makes her call to action much stronger and repeating the words equal, sustainable, and peaceful shows that Bahous believes that equality is achievable and women
