A Modest Proposal Arianna Pomares Swift wants the reader to view his speaker as satirical, who is proposing a solution for his country's crisis. As a reasonable man who wants the greater good. The diction of the first seven paragraphs is used to set the connotation of the proposal by using words like “female sex” instead of “women”. And “flesh” instead of “skin”. The purpose of this was so that the reader would not overreact when Swift dropped the actual proposal. He did it in a logical way so that it would be true. Swift explained the anticipated results before actually saying what the plan is so that one could become interested in the proposal and clearly picture all the beneficial outcomes. If he were to have stopped at the word food then the reader would have left of with the thought that they would be eating children. However, Swift cleverly appealed to one's senses and has now managed to leave the reader contemplating the savor of the dish. Aside from the classical appeals, Swift made an appeal to thrift when he mentioned that the flesh of babies could be use to make nice gloves for ladies. This appealed to vanity and possibly widened the crowd that would potentially support his proposal. There was an economical appeal because selling babies for food would reduce the amount of poverty seen on the city streets. In paragraph 17 Swift proposes an additional solution to the problem which was to eat young woman instead of children. However, along with this plan he also included all of its negative factors thus further reinforcing his original proposal of consuming babies.
