Josie Appleton’s piece opens with her introducing the fact that body modification has lost its mark of being taboo. Appleton then transitions into describing the different kinds of people that modify their bodies and why they do it. The fact that people used to mostly use tattoos to identify with a group and are now using them to define themselves is heavily enforced. The rest of the piece describes in great detail the different ways people use piercings and tattoos to better understand themselves and mark important milestones. The piece concludes with Appleton claiming that body modification should only be for fashion, because bringing significance to it causes problems.
Escape from Camp 14 is the true story of Shin Dong-hyuk, who is the only known person to have been born in and escape from a North Korean labor camp. After numerous interviews, the book’s author, Blaine Harden, details the reader about Shin’s life both inside and outside the camp as he assimilates into different societies. As critical information is revealed, Harden uncovers the corruption in the political landscape in North Korea. Shin’s life in Camp 14 accentuates the struggles to gain basic human freedom and elucidates food as an even more precious commodity. The straightforward diction and intriguing combination of rhetorical devices effectively expresses the brutality and oppression in the North Korean prison camp.
Analysis of the Rhetorical Strategy used by Mike Rose in “Blue Collar Brilliance” Scrolling through social media, one would see a lot of posts from accounts called RelatableGifs2016, or SchoolMemes101. From the names of the accounts one can make an educated guess about they might post. Relatable pictures. When something is familiar it becomes more understandable, and people tend to empathize more with something if they can have a connection with it.
My definition of rhetoric before the readings was simply: successful written or oral communication with a clear purpose & audience in mind. After completing the readings, I have decided that is not specific enough and does not encompass what rhetoric really is. The readings by Crusus, Channell, and Drucker helped establish a clear relationship between argument, “mature reasoning”, and communication as a mode used to communicate. Both of the readings provided a clearer understanding of argument and communication, key components to rhetoric, but did not change my definition until I read “The Rhetorical Situation” by Bitzer. The idea of a rhetorical situation, provided a clear application of the question: “What is rhetoric?”

“If you don 't want to sink, you better figure out how to swim” (41). Although Rex Walls was not always an admirable father and role model, he did make an essential point while teaching his daughter, Jeannette, how to swim. In life, not everything comes without resistance. As Jeannette Walls describes throughout her life story, sometimes people are forced to face hardships that make them question their whole life. However, as seen in her book, it is important to learn to take those hardships and use them to shape one’s future for the better.
In the Lord of the Flies by William Golding, many children get stranded on an island after their plane had crashed. The children need to work together to figure out how to survive without any adults to help them along the way, until they are rescued and brought home. The author uses symbolism, and irony to develop the theme that without society’s rigid rules, anarchy and savagery can come out. When the children first landed on the island, they stuck together and kind of made a little society and “village” of their own. They made shelters, had a bathroom, bathing pool, etc.
Within the incisive “Polly Baker’s speech,” Benjamin Franklin satirizes the patriarchal structure of the judicial system that unfairly judges women. Franklin utilizes a sardonic persona of a “poor” 18th century women being “persecuted for the fifth time, for having a bastard child” who only wants her “fine remitted.” Through his judicious use of hyperbole and his persona’s rhetorical conditional statements, Franklin produces a sarcastic tone in Polly Baker’s speech and ridicules the “great men” who enforce the institutionalized bias against women under the rule of law.
When animals around the planet begin to attack humankind, it is up to one man to persuade the world to take action, or allow themselves to perish. Jackson Oz, a dropout from Columbia University, has for years, been developing a theory called HAC or Human Animal Conflict. After noticing an increasing number vicious of animal attacks on humans, Oz dropped out of Columbia University to focus more on HAC, that raised several eyebrows from his peers. He has no job or PhD and is struggling. All over the world, brutal attacks are destroying entire cities.
In his untitled gun control and gun rights cartoon, Chris Britt establishes an accusatory tone using critical irony and a macabre diction to condemn the national threat disregarded by the Republican Party for ignorantly advocating unregulated licensing of guns. Chris Britt evidently displays, in his work, a frustrated sentiment towards the American federal government, specifically addressing the Republican Party. Deliberately, Chris Britt labeled the gun store as “GOP Guns and Gore” and highlighting that the store is “Open 24-7”. Bluntly, Britt specified “GOP” (“Grand Old Party”), interchangeably corresponding to the Republican Party, to emphasize his personal disdain against their party platform. Sonny’s Blues by James Baldwin was a short story about the struggles of living in a tough, rundown neighborhood and looking to drugs as a way out. Baldwin’s intent on writing this piece focuses on pain and suffering. The author stresses that not everybody is born in the best circumstances. Sonny was one of those people who grew up in a rickety town where people often did not make it out successful.
Mark Twain, an 18th century humorist, was known for his critical and satirical writing. In one of his most famous essays, “ Fenimore Coopers Literary Offenses” Twain addresses Coopers inability to realistically develop a “situation” and his failure to effectively back up his stories in order for them to be more plausible. To dramatically convey his unimpressed and sarcastic attitude, he applies biting diction, metaphors and hypophora throughout this work . By continuously using biting diction, Twain develops a mocking tone towards Fenimore Cooper’s incapability to create even the simplest of storylines. In the title of the work a sarcastic tone is evident; the word choice is utilized to reinforce the argument stating how Coopers work is an offense to the world of literature.
The movie “Coach Carter” was based off of a true story. It was written by Samuel L. Jackson directed by Thomas Carter. A California high school basketball coach puts school grades above sports. His purpose is because he went against that success for young adults is achieved through the world of sports than the classroom. Being successful was to be a good role model and that is what the movie “Coach Carter” is all about.
Sentence Assessment Task Rhetorical Analysis: “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” (Austen) Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen) Austen’s famous statement on marriage and equality continues to resonate in modern society. In comparison to today, the Victorian era significantly suppressed women’s rights (Hughes). However, Austen juxtaposes that idea by stating that it is the man, no matter how wealthy, who ‘must be in want of a wife.’
The sound of the rain made felt calm. Likewise, it reminded me that any struggle that was dealing was a temporary event. That event was not going to have a long duration. During the seven and eight lecture, Professor Garfin talked about the meaning of the word rain. The word “RAIN” is the recognition of the problem, acceptance of the problem, investigation of the problem, and non-identification of problem.
