“Get Back Home” is a Negro spiritual song that was inspired by “Trouble of The World” by Mahalia Jackson. Mahalia Jackson was an African American gospel singer and civil rights activist who also sang spirituals. She is also known for the queen of gospel music and had a very strong and powerful voice. Throughout her singing career she made a promise to only use her voice for spiritual song and she keep that promise. She keep her career strong by keeping the faith and making song for hope to make through the next day. I wrote lyrics based on sadness and pain that we as African Americans endured during slavery and during civil right movement. In my song I basically state that we as African American are tired of suffering and pain and the only escape we got is the lord coming and taking us away from this cruel world. In the song I incorporated her style from “Trouble of The World” which is very similar to my song that I wrote and the lyrics states how we as African American are just tired and this storm that we facing will be gone soon because we are going to be with thy Almighty God himself. “Soon the storm will be over” “And my pain will be gone” “I got to get back to my home” “And my pain will be gone”.
Overall I believe that I successfully incorporated her style. I personally think the song she wrote about was about transcending the physical world or realm and admitting to oneself. Emphasizing the message that this world is however a brief time and regardless of how much torment and enduring you are set to persevere there will be a period and you will where you comprehend that you have a higher cause. This means that we as African Americans will be liberated from the shackles of fear and stress and surrender everything over to the higher
